HEDGE PRUNING

Not only does pruning keep a hedge healthy, but by removing dead limbs it prevents other limbs from dying, which stimulates new growth. A cleaned out hedge will allow more air to get to the branches and trunk and make for a happier, thicker, greener hedge.

There are two forms of hedging, informal and formal hedging.

INFORMAL HEDGING

  • Gives your shrubs a natural look
  • Cedars can quickly grow beyond the point of refinery if not kept trimmed and maintained
  • Cedar hedges should be pruned in September allowing cut back of summer growth and still
  • Leaving enough time for the new growth to harden off before winter

FORMAL HEDGING

  • Requires straight lines, angles and curves (typically boxwoods or holly)
